Description
A protein whose level rises when cells lack iron. It is less affected by inflammation, so it helps detect iron deficiency where ferritin may be misleading.
When to Take This Test
- Suspected iron deficiency with inflammation or a chronic illness
- An unclear ferritin result
- As ordered by a hematologist
Preparation
- In the morning on an empty stomach, 8–12 hours without food (water is fine)
- Avoid fatty food and alcohol the day before
