Description
A liver enzyme. A rise in ALT is one of the earliest signs that liver cells are being harmed (by viruses, medications, fatty food, or alcohol).
When to Take This Test
- Checking and maintaining liver health
- Discomfort under the right ribs, nausea, fatigue
- Monitoring medications that affect the liver
- Often tested together with AST
Preparation
- On an empty stomach, 8–12 hours without food
- Avoid alcohol and fatty food for a day beforehand
- Avoid strenuous exercise the day before
