Description
Microscopy of a smear to determine vaginal cleanliness. Assesses the makeup of the vaginal microflora — the balance of beneficial lactobacilli and other microorganisms — and signs of inflammation.
When to Take This Test
- Discharge, itching, discomfort
- Preventive checkup with a gynecologist
- Pregnancy, before gynecological procedures
Preparation
- Don't urinate for 1.5–2 hours before the swab
- Women — not during menstruation
- No vaginal suppositories, douching, or sexual contact for 1–2 days beforehand
