Description
PCR detection of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 DNA — a highly accurate direct method for detecting the virus in a swab sample. Finds the infection even at low levels and without symptoms.
When to Take This Test
- Symptoms of a urogenital infection
- Planning pregnancy, infertility
- Screening as ordered by a doctor
Preparation
- Don't urinate for 1.5–2 hours before the swab
- Women — not during menstruation
- No vaginal suppositories, douching, or sexual contact for 1–2 days beforehand
